Grade 3 - Grade 5
Having spent an approximate 6 years in the Elementary section, the kids now move into the Primary School. – which is the Grade 3- 5 arena. The knowledge and basics of Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Art and Craft Skills, have all been given to them. With that basic foundation and understanding the children move into Grade 3.
Now they feel that they are growing up, with only one class teacher and about 14 subjects to handle, where they meet many a subject teacher giving them the tinge of growing up.
Subjects are now eared into English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Computer, Elocution, Art, Singing and Dancing etc which are all meant to make them more rounded in their aptitudes.
Class assemblies which are conducted once a month by each class gives the opportunity to pull out latent talents in the children in Music, Song, Dance and Drama. Being on stage also gives a kick to their personality development and build up of confidence.
They now get into an Inter House Competitive arena for the Swimming Meet and the Athletic Meet which are held annually. “Cultural Day is also an Anuual Event and helps to focus and develop their talents. Parents Days are conducted once a term, so that it enables parents to connect with the teachers in order to find out about the progress that their children are making. If the parents have a need to meet any teacher other than on Parents Day, they could do so by prior appointment through the school office.
The Cambridge curriculum which was adopted in the UKG (Year 1) is now continued in the Primary section, laying emphasis on English, Mathematics and Science, apart from the other subjects that are worked concurrently. At grade 5 (year 6) the children have their first taste of an International Examination in the Cambridge Primary Checkpoint Examination. The essence of this is the preparation for them to have transition into the next level which is Secondary 1.
Grade 6 - Grade 8
As students of the Primary School progress on to the Junior School, they reach the academic competence level that covers Grade 6, 7 and 8. Here they learn the basics of assuming responsibilities as young individuals.
The parallel classes are designed to cultivate equal outputs; students make a transition from Social Studies in the Primary School to History and Geography in the Junior School. Similarly they pursue Science as it branches into Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
At the end of the academic year, the students of Grade 8 sit for the Cambridge Checkpoint Examination in the 3 main subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. They receive their results from Cambridge with an Assessment for each child along with an achievement score sheet.
This is the point where the students can decide whether they want to direct their career towards Science, Commerce, Arts or Languages groupings as they reach Grade 9.
This change is intended to build them in readiness for the exam oriented classes of Grade 9 to 12. A Headmistress, Class Teachers and Subject Teachers handle all aspects of work and discipline. Junior Prefects are selected from Grade 8 in order to help out in the manifold activities in the school. This is the training ground for them to take up responsibilities. The termly Parents’ days are an opportunity for parents to meet teachers and check on all aspects of the progress of their children. This is also a forum for them to get to work with the school, as the school does look for a constant Parent- Teacher- Child relationship.
Grade 9 - Grade 12
The Senior School which is located at No 5, Queen’s Road, Colombo 3, provides an all-encompassing education in a co-educational environment. The Senior School follows the Cambridge Curriculum and the students have two major levels of examinations.
- Cambridge O/Level Examination in Grade 10 (Year 11)
- Cambridge A/Level Examination in Grade 12 ( Year 13)
- Cambridge A/Level Examination in Grade 12 ( Year 13)
The Students of Grade 9 have the option of choosing Science, Arts or Commerce streams. The Principal meets every child individually, along with his or her parents and gives the guidance that is needed to help the child to pick the subjects for the Cambridge O/Level Examination.
The Cambridge AS Level 1 Examination is the stepping stone to University programming and the Principal along with the subject teachers help the students to find their direction. As the Examinations draw closer, the Principal along with his dedicated staff conduct extra classes for the children to make them absolutely confident and comfortable. This is the speciality at Wycherley.
At the senior school, the children are given responsibility in various Societies, that help to build their social skills as well as the skill to take up responsibilities. Holding office in many Clubs and Societies and being chosen as Prefects, sharpen them to shoulder many events. They juggle these in between their regular Academic work, which help in their personality development.
As they leave the portals of Wycherley after Grade 12, they are ready to take a new direction in their lives, which open out into many dimensions of career development.
