The first batch of students who completed the Cambridge ICT Starters Programme at Wycherley International School received their certificates from Mr. Kingsley Jayasinghe – Director / Principal on Thursday 3rd of September 2020. The award ceremony took place at School to appreciate and applaud the students on receiving their 1st ever Cambridge Certificate in ICT.
Wycherley took a very decisive step in shifting to being a fully-fledged Cambridge School in 2009. Wycherley currently follows a complete Cambridge Curriculum from UKG (Year 1) right up to the A/Levels. Cambridge International Assessments, the provider of the Cambridge Curriculum is a part of the Cambridge University (UK) which is also known as the # 1 University in the World providing students a wide range of options in their Primary and Secondary education. The world is subject to constant changes and Cambridge
International Programmes also change accordingly. Today, education is about teaching students the skills they need to succeed in a fast paced and competitive society. Cambridge has always delivered world class education through high quality assessment and services. The Cambridge Education Programmes are for students ranging from 5 – 19 years of age.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Kingsley Jayasinghe – Director / Principal went on to say that “Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has now become a part of the educational experience of children in most parts of the World. The Cambridge ICT Starters programme has been integrated into our School ICT curriculum. This has given our kids the exposure into an internationally recognized ICT certification at a very early stage. I’m indeed very proud of the children’s achievement today and wish them all the very best in their next levels and hope they obtain the very best from this programme conducted at school which comes to them as a part of their learning experience at Wycherley. The consistent efforts put by the teachers has brought out the true potential of our students and enabled them to face examinations with utmost confidence. We commend the tremendous support provided by our parents encouraging students to proactively participate in this examination”.
ICT is now being considered a new “literacy” apart from Reading, Writing and Numeracy. The Cambridge ICT Starters is designed to introduce students to the main applications which they will need to use in order to understand the effect of Technology in their daily lives. The syllabus provides a framework in which ICT competence and practical skills can be developed within an environment that is appropriate for the age of the learners. It also provides a structured scheme of assessment. At each stage of the assessment, learners will use ICT to communicate, handle information, model and measure and control.
The Cambridge ICT syllabus at Wycherley operates at 3 levels viz:
- INITIAL STEPS
- NEXT STEPS
- ON TRACK
Each level of the scheme contains two stages, each with an equal number of modules. The assessments were completed at School as Practical Tests to show that they can demonstrate each of the learning objectives with no help from their teachers or their peers. The students will receive a pass or merit grade in each assessment test if they meet all the criteria specified on the learning objectives.
All students will follow this programme at Wycherley along with their ICT Curriculum. Our teachers are trained and the curriculum is based on text books recommended directly from Cambridge. Fundamentally, ICT is a central tool that supports teaching and learning at all stages of education. We live in a World consumed by Technology. As such, ICT can help to improve achievement levels, inspire creative thinking and encourage the development of skills that prove invaluable in the real World.
Cambridge ICT Starters gives schools a flexible framework to develop learners’ ICT competence. Modules can be delivered according to the needs of each learning stage and age of the learners – across the curriculum or as a separate course of study. The curriculum is designed specifically based on learner needs and has tools that students can apply across any stream of study.
Learners will develop key ICT skills in a range of applications including computer programming, word processing, digital graphics, databases, spreadsheets, email, presentations, video/animation, the internet and web authoring. They will also consider wider issues such as E-Safety and the adaption of their work to suit their audience.
Cambridge Assessments International Examinations’ ranks as the World’s largest provider of International Education Programmes for students. I am happy to have received my certificate from Cambridge as it was a very interesting experience for all of us. I was able to overcome my anxiety to face the exam as we had done several mock assessments in class which made me confident and comfortable at the main examination. All students interested in pursuing IT for their future will definitely get a good exposure through the ICT starters programme
We are really thankful to the school for facilitating the Cambridge ICT Starters programme. This has given them the confidence to face an Internationally recognized examination and obtain a Cambridge certificate in their early years. We are sure they will use this foundation to build up their future
I consider myself to be truly privileged and proud to implement the Cambridge ICT Starters programme for students for the first time at Wycherley International School. Cambridge ICT Starters programme became a platform for our young learners to develop key ICT skills in a range of applications. As a result of completing a comprehensive series of practical sessions and mock examinations all our students achieved exceptional results at the recent submission in the year 2019.
The Cambridge ICT Starters programme was unique compared to the other examinations I have previously faced. The syllabus was well planned and very well taught. A mock exam was held to give an understanding on how the exam was going to be and tips to improve. All the facilities were available with no technical difficulties
I am really privileged to receive my first certificate from Cambridge. This certificate motivates me to focus more on the subject of Computing and with frequent mock assessments the fear of examinations has reduced. ICT Programme teaches us daily use programmes like word and excel. I am happy to be a part of this

ICT has helped me to learn many applications like Paint, Microsoft office, Gmail and the coding software – Scratch, which is interesting to learn. I’m indeed proud of my 1st Cambridge Certificate which I received today
As the teacher of ICT at Wycherley International School – Primary Section, I have noticed a vast improvement in the IT knowledge of our students after the introduction of the Cambridge ICT Starters Programme. The course material is well structured and it was something new for me as well as the students. Wycherley International School is the first School in Sri Lanka to follow the Cambridge ICT Starters programme and I am very happy and proud to be a part of it. A lot of effort and hardwork was put in by all the students to complete this program and I’m sure all of them enjoyed the programme as much as I did teaching and guiding them.
I Would like to take this special opportunity to thank Wycherley International for introducing this examination for the first time in Sri Lanka and thank the ICT teacher who had given the best support on my son’s achievement and would like to congratulate all the other students for their hard work
We value our association with Wycherley International School and it gives me great pleasure to congratulate the students from Wycherley International School on their achievement in completing the Cambridge ICT starters syllabus. Syllabuses like ICT Starters are now a part the educational experience worldwide and regarded as a new ‘literacy’ alongside reading, writing and numeracy, and help build strong foundation for students at a very early stage in life. We hope that the Cambridge Primary program and our other programmes & qualifications encourages them to continue their learning journey to learn, discover and achieve, and wish them all the best for their future.
I believe that getting a certificate from an Internationally reputed institution is very good and I am glad the school introduced it to students as IT is very useful and a good path to pursue for their future. I appreciate the continued support from the teachers and the school in helping our children achieve new heights
